MilMUN 2010. Finding the Right Balance: Towards a Global Social Contract

At MilMUN 2010, university students have the opportunity to participate in an international simulation of the United Nations as well as the Council of the European Union, taking on the role of delegates, judges, and ministers. The MilMUN Chronicle News will also field a team of journalists covering all the events taking place during the week.

This year's theme Finding the Right Balance: Towards a Global Social Contract, covers a wide variety of important issues affecting our societies, and questions the very foundations of human governance. Following the financial crisis and it's consequences on world markets, it has become evident that our economies are all inter-linked, and that our joint needs for resources make us interdependent. We can no longer live the way we have, paying little attention to the negative effect our actions may have on the planet, or the livelihood of other people. We are therefore all responsible for creating sustainable global solutions, helping to shape and regulate the rules that govern human life.

With this in mind, the following committees/workshops will be simulated at MILMUN 2010:

1. The United Nations Security Council
Delegates in the Security Council will discuss the Right to Self-Determination and its Security Implications, as well as address the issue of Nuclear Proliferation and Disarmament.

2. The United Nations Economic and Social Council
Delegates at the Economic and Social Council will mull over the Implementation of a Global Health Programme, as well as discuss various policies promoting development with the South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

3. The United Nations Human Rights Council
Delegates at the Human Rights Council will treat the issue of Somali Governance, Anti-Governmental Protests, as well as Discrimination on the Basis of Sexual Orientation.

4. The United Nations International Court of Justice
Judges at the International Court of Justice will deliberate on the Jurisdictional Immunity of Sovereign States.

5. The Council of the European Union
Ministers at the Council of the European Union will consider the Reform of the Labour Market, as well as Europe's Environmental Policy.

6. The MilMUN Chronicle News
Journalists at the MilMUN Chronicle News will report on all the topics in all councils, as well as cover the social events in the evenings.
